Take a second and think back over your college, high school, junior high, and elementary school career. How many of your teachers were black? How many of them were in a leadership role to spread knowledge different than what you’ve always heard? How many of them were able to add in their own experience without having to diminish it for fear of getting in trouble for deviating (no matter how much it was relevant or true to the curriculum) from what was required?

I’m giving thanks because I know I’m blessed to be in this position at The Design School. The passion of all teachers lies not only in explaining the importance of their profession, but also the importance of their own experiences in the world. Beyond what is just required.

My students AND my clients all deserve to understand and learn the true and full history – not just partial – whether that is in my profession or outside of it.

For me, this is not just a chance to teach, but a chance to continue to add to the legacy of black history not just in February but every day. I am my ancestors wildest dreams.
